Niall Ó Callanáin & Band
A New album “Live” Phoenix PPCD102

Irish Bouzouki player Niall Ó Callanáín along with his band, jazz/blues guitarist Jimmy Faulkner, Kevin Shields on flute, Angolan percussionist Mario Ngoma, and bass player Martin Curry recorded this album in the Spirit Store in Dundalk, Ireland during a tour in April 2001. Taking some material from his previous (studio) album Strings & Things, along with many new numbers, the album consists entirely of instrumental music composed by Niall himself. The music has a distinctly jazz feel while retaining a strong Irish flavour but also sits comfortably in the wider World Music environment.

Widely regarded for his innovative and versatile approach to bouzouki playing, this album is significant in that it showcases Niall’s unique playing style. His use of jazz type chord shapes and structures, lead breaks and solo fingerpicking style as featured on this recording breaks new ground and will be seen as the benchmark for future generations of bouzouki players.

This recording captures the excitement and dynamic of Niall and his Band at a live concert, and also the melodic flair of his compositions. All the musicians are renowned players in their own fields, bringing to this recording their own individuality and character from their backgrounds in Jazz, Blues, African and South American Rhythms and Irish Traditional Music. The product of this eclectic backdrop combined with Niall’s musical creations is an exciting and original band who’s music is instantly accessible to any audience and would happily grace any stage in the world.
